POSITION: Dental Hygienist
LOCATION: Red Cliff Community Health Center
SALARY: Negotiable depending upon qualifications
THIS IS A REGULAR FULL-TIME NON EXEMPT POSITION

Administrator
JOB SUMMARY: Serves as a licensed/registered
dental hygienist with knowledge of oral health promotion and disease
prevention.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Performs prophylactic and preventive dental procedures.
- Completes preliminary dental examinations.
- Review patient’s medical and dental history.
- Examine teeth and surrounding tissue for evidence of
plaque and periodontal disease and chart findings.
- Inspects the mouth and throat for evidence of disease.
- Interprets routine x-rays and refers abnormalities to the
dentist.
- Prepares dental hygiene treatment plans and the sequence
of appointments needed to complete treatment.
- Performs a complete oral prophylaxis on patients.
- Performs a sub gingival scaling, root planning and
curettage under local anesthesia.
- Gives home care instructions to patients.
- Performs suture removal.
- Applies topical and administers local anesthetic.
- Takes preliminary impressions.
- Applies fluoride using tray techniques.
- Maintains recall system for follow-up.
- Educates patients on need for daily oral health and
fluoride treatment.
- Removes overhanging margins of fillings when possible.
- Instructs patients in oral hygiene, brushing and flossing
techniques and periodontal aids.
- Plans and adapts instructions in home care techniques.
- Explains to patients the causes of periodontal disease,
tooth loss and tooth decay.
- Demonstrates oral health care to various patient groups.
- Instruct nurses/nursing assistants in the proper
techniques of oral hygiene.
- Exposes, develops and processes radiographs on patients.
- Helps to maintain developer solutions and function.
- Adjusts voltage, amperage and timing of x-ray equipment.
- Selects type of radiograph that will be necessary.
- Positions film and machine to insure coverage of area to
be x-rayed.
- Maintains patient’s record of treatment including full
mouth probes.
- Records oral conditions of teeth, surrounding tissues, and
progress with therapy and appointments.
- Applies dental sealants.
- Helps organize and order supplies.
- Monitors equipment function and amount of supplies used.
- Maintains quality of instruments with sharpening and
sterilizing.
- Complete monthly, quarterly, and annual reports as
required by Health Center Administration, Health Board, Tribal Council,
regulatory bodies, and/or third party payers. Maintain a record of all
reports and supporting documentation as required.
- Maintain the confidentiality of all client specific
information and data in accord with federal and state guidelines and
requirements.
- Present a professional, caring image for the Health Center
and its programs.
- Maintain a cooperative relationship with other Health Center
staff and co-workers.
- Demonstrate tact, courtesy, and respect in communication
and interaction with Health Center patients, visitors, and staff and with
outside agencies and programs.
- Promote a working environment noted for effective
cooperation and collaboration between programs, services, and co-workers.
- Dress appropriately to promote professionalism within the
Health Center.
- Utilize the resources, materials, office supplies,
equipment and physical plant allocated for use by the Red Cliff Community Health
Center in accord with professional practice norms and Tribal policy.
- Participate in quality assurance measures conducted within
the Health Center.
- Adhere to a professional code of conduct and applicable
federal and state laws and regulations in the discharge of these assigned
duties.
- Attend staff and other meetings, in-services, and other
events as directed by supervisor.
- Participate in the implementation of grants, contracts,
and projects being carried out under the auspices of the Red Cliff Community
Health Center and at the direction of the Administrator. These
activities are to comply with the directives of the Tribal Council and
Health Center Administration and to fulfill the conditions of the
individual grant, contract, or project. The specific duties will reflect
the individual program in initiative and the concurrent needs and
resources of the Health Center. These assignments will vary from time to
time due to the cyclical nature of these program efforts.
- Performs other job related duties as directed by the
immediate supervisor or Tribal Administration.
SUPERVISORY AUTHORITY: None
KNOWLEDGE: Knowledge of oral anatomy and bone
structure of the face to take diagnostic dental radiographs. Knowledge of
disease prevention techniques, dental terminology, and record keeping
procedures. Knowledge of sterilization and infection control techniques, oral
pathology, disease prevention and dental prophylaxis. Ability to organize, and
analyze data, draws conclusions and makes decisions or recommendations.
Express ideas and communicate information orally and in writing in a clear,
logical and motivating manner.
QUALIFICATIONS: Successful completion of dental
hygiene program recognized and accredited by the American Dental Association. Including
the use and administration of local anesthetics.
PERSONAL CONTACTS: Daily contact with patients,
visitors, primary care providers, Tribal and Health Center Administration, and
other Health Center staff.
PHYSICAL
REQUIREMENTS: The duties assigned to this position involve bending,
stooping, lifting, and carrying. Items may be placed on overhead storage.
Weights to be carried are usually less than 50 pounds. At times, the Dental
Hygienist will be required to personally assist patients.
WORK ENVIRONMENT: Red cliff Community Health Center;
office and clinic settings. Exposure to hazards of the health care industry.
Work setting must be maintained as a clean, nonsmoking, well-ventilated area in
compliance with all applicable safety regulations.
TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS: Must have valid WI driver’s
license, vehicle, and at least liability insurance. If no insurance, must get
within three weeks. Must also be eligible for the Tribe’s vehicle insurance. May
require overnight travel to attend meetings or training.
